The IRS Direct File platform is now available to eligible taxpayers in all 50 states for the first time, allowing free electronic filing directly with the government without third-party software. The expansion follows successful pilot programs in 25 states during the 2025 filing season.

The platform supports W-2 income, standard deductions, the earned income tax credit, and child tax credits. Self-employed filers and those with complex investment income must still use alternative preparation methods.

Tax preparation industry groups have lobbied against the program, arguing it represents government overreach. Consumer advocates counter that free direct filing saves low- and middle-income taxpayers hundreds of dollars annually in preparation fees.
