The Internal Revenue Service has announced extended filing deadlines for taxpayers in several states that were affected by severe weather events earlier this year. Residents and businesses in the designated disaster areas now have until August 15, 2026, to file their federal tax returns and make payments without penalty.
The extension applies automatically to taxpayers whose addresses of record are within the declared disaster zones. Those who live outside the affected areas but have records or tax professionals located within them may also qualify for relief by contacting the IRS disaster hotline.
Tax professionals remind affected taxpayers that state filing deadlines may differ from the federal extension and should be verified separately. Additionally, taxpayers who are due refunds are encouraged to file as soon as possible rather than waiting until the extended deadline, as there is no benefit to delaying a refund claim.
