The April 15 tax deadline is approaching, and millions of Americans are considering filing for an extension. But does an extension delay your payment obligation? Here is the truth.
What an Extension Does
Form 4868 gives you an automatic 6-month extension to file your return (until October 15, 2026). However, it does NOT extend the deadline to pay taxes owed. You must estimate and pay by April 15 to avoid penalties.
Penalties for Late Payment
- Late payment penalty: 0.5% per month on unpaid taxes
- Late filing penalty: 5% per month (much higher)
- Interest: Federal short-term rate + 3% (currently 8%)
Who Should File an Extension
Extensions make sense if you are waiting for K-1 forms from partnerships, have complex international income, or need more time to gather documents. If you expect a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.
